Tufts Health Plan Ending December 31, 2024
As previously communicated to the Massachusetts employees enrolled in the Tufts medical plan, the plan will no longer be offered as a health care option in 2025. If you’re currently enrolled in the Tufts medical plan, you’ll need to choose a new medical option during 2025 Open Enrollment. If you’re impacted by this change, we’ll provide you with more details and guidance on how to select the best medical plan for your needs and budget.
Health Savings Account (HSA)
If you’re enrolled in the Anthem HDHP, Marvell’s contribution to your HSA will increase from $600 to $700 for employee-only coverage and $1,200 to $1,500 for family coverage.
The maximum pre-tax contribution for 2025 is increasing from $4,150 to $4,300 for employee-only coverage and from $8,300 to $8,550 for family coverage. Employees age 55 or older can contribute an additional $1,000 to their HSA.
Check out the new Health Equity HSA Calculator for examples of the Anthem HDHP (w/HSA) benefits and tax savings compared to the other Anthem plans.
Flexible Spending Acccount (FSA)
The 2025 Flexible Spending Account (FSA) maximums are:
- $3,300 for the Health Care FSA
- $3,300 for the Limited Health Care FSA
- $5,000 for the Day Care FSA
IMPORTANT: FSA dollars DO NOT roll over from year to year. Claims incurred before December 31, 2024, but not submitted by March 31, 2025, will not be eligible for reimbursement, so plan accordingly when you make your new FSA elections.
Dental Buy-Up Plan Ending December 31, 2024
The Delta Dental Buy-Up Plan will no longer be offered as a dental care option. After careful review, we determined the cost of the plan compared to the participation levels did not warrant keeping the plan in 2025. The comprehensive benefits, including a $2,000 annual implant coverage, are available through the Delta Dental PPO Plan (previously called the Delta Dental Base Plan) and will continue to be available in 2025.
If you’re currently enrolled in the Delta Dental Buy-Up Plan and you do not make a change for 2025, you and your covered dependents will automatically be enrolled into the Delta Dental PPO Plan.

Health Savings Accounts: A Strategic Financial Tool
The Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged savings account designed to help you save for medical expenses. The HSA offers a unique combination of tax benefits and flexibility, making it an attractive option for those looking to manage their healthcare costs while also planning for the future. You must be enrolled in the Anthem Blue Cross HDHP to enroll in the HSA.
Tax Advantages of the HSA
The HSA offers several significant tax advantages:
- Tax-deductible contributions: Contributions to the HSA are tax-deductible, reducing your taxable income for the year. This can result in substantial tax savings, especially for individuals in higher tax brackets.
- Tax-free growth: The funds in your HSA grow tax-free. Any interest or investment gains earned within the account are not subject to federal income tax, allowing your savings to compound over time.
- Tax-free withdrawals: Withdrawals from your HSA for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. This includes a wide range of health care costs, from doctor visits and prescriptions to dental and vision care.
The HSA and Retirement Planning
While the HSA is primarily designed to cover medical expenses, it can also be a powerful tool for retirement planning.
- Long-term savings: Unlike the Health Care Flexible Spending Account, the HSA does not have a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy. The funds in your HSA roll over year after year, allowing you to build a significant nest egg over time.
- Investment opportunities: The HSA also offers investment options, enabling you to grow your savings. These investments can enhance your retirement portfolio and provide additional financial security.
- Post-retirement medical expenses: Healthcare costs often increase with age. The HSA can help you cover these expenses in retirement without dipping into your other savings or retirement accounts.
- Penalty-free withdrawals at age 65: After you turn 65, you can withdraw funds from your HSA for any purpose without incurring a penalty, though the withdrawals will be subject to income tax if not used for qualified medical expenses.
Should You Enroll in the Anthem Blue Cross HDHP with HSA?
Enrolling in the Anthem Blue Cross HDHP to access the HSA should be a strategic decision. Here are some factors to consider:
- Health care needs: Assess your health care needs and expenses. If you anticipate low to moderate health care costs, an HSA can help you save on premiums and out-of-pocket expenses. Don’t forget, with the Anthem Blue Cross HDHP, you’ll need to cover the larger deductible out of pocket before the plan will pay a portion of covered expenses.
- Tax benefits: Consider the tax advantages. If you are in a higher tax bracket, the tax-deductible contributions and tax-free growth can provide significant savings.
- Long-term financial goals: Evaluate your long-term financial goals. If you are looking for ways to enhance your retirement savings, the HSA’s investment options and rollover benefits make it an attractive choice.
- Marvell’s contributions: In 2025, Marvell’s contribution will increase to $700 for employee-only coverage and $1,500 for family coverage. These contributions can significantly boost your savings and help you cover out-of-pocket expenses before you meet your deductible.
Health Savings Accounts are more than just a way to pay for medical expenses—they are a versatile financial tool that can benefit you now and in retirement. By understanding their tax advantages and strategic uses, you can make an informed decision during this year's Open Enrollment. Take the time to evaluate your health care needs, financial goals, and eligibility to determine if the Anthem Blue Cross HDHP with HSA is the right choice for you.
Check out the new Health Equity HSA Calculator for examples of the Anthem HDHP (w/HSA) benefits and tax savings compared to the other Anthem plans.
